Water Retention Landscaping (WRL) is a methodology of changing the contour of a site – specifically the way the shape of the land influences runoff – in order to move water away from structures and to slow it down.

Creating basins and swales provides intentional space for water to collect and soak into the ground, instead of letting it run off into the street.

These areas become much more fertile and provide passive irrigation to fruit trees and other plants that like more water. Water that soaks into the soil is cleaned by the soil before feeding plants or recharging aquifers.

WRL is the most powerful tool a homeowner can use to benefit the ecosystem in California.
